Discover Sofia

Weather

With a moderate continental climate with high temperature amplitudes, the hottest month is August while January is the coldest. The temperatures in Sofia generally remain cooler than other parts of Bulgaria in summer, due to the high altitude of the valley in which it is situated. However temperatures can still reach up to 40 °C on occasions.

Culture

As Bulgaria’s administrative, cultural, economic and educational centre, Sofia has numerous museums, an extensive nightlife scene with clubs, live venues, pubs and restaurants and enjoys a booming film industry. Sofia is also the centre of Bulgaria’s sporting activities, and the highest ski resort in Bulgaria is only 10km from Sofia.

Location

Dramatically ringed by the Balkan Mountains to the north and the Vitosha Mountains to the south, the capital stands on an open plain 550m above sea level in western Bulgaria. Public transport is well developed with bus, tram and underground networks.
